A blog for the concept art of Nightingale.

I just packed up my portfolio for Angouleme, including tons of “Sister Claire” and “Nightingale” artwork, as well as a hefty sampling of my other art styles.
Here’s hoping some editors are impressed!

I think I solved the riddle of drawing Emily’s hair! YES

This Is Insightful, You Should Watch It of the Day: There are myriad everyday activities that we “sighties” take for granted. For instance: Withdrawing money from an ATM.

Tommy Edison the Blind Film Critic demonstrates the modern ATM’s accessibility, or, rather, its striking lack thereof.

Compared to Toronto Amsterdam biking is highly advanced, massive and much more popular. And it is so much fun to find some funny bikes and bikers on the streets.

Spent all day trying to pinpoint all the locations I scouted for Nightingale on a GoogleMaps map

Googlemaps, y u so frustrating?!

GoogleMaps is awesome, and it mostly works well, but it has some seriously annoying bugs that they should have fixed by now.

One of my biggest frustrations is not being able to drag the Street Viewer to a location and right-click to save that exact location (including the direction you’re facing.)  You have to manually select the approximated location and then hope your collaborator will know what point you’re referring to when the view inevitably points the wrong way when they open the link. =/

Here is the map, for those interested.

Some photos of the massive Amsterdam Central Library. Ok, you know that giant library in “Beauty and the Beast” that the Beast gives her for xmas?  The Amsterdam Central Library is bigger. And better.

You would not BELIEVE how big this building is. I didn’t count all the floors, but I think it’s about 7-8.  The top and bottom floors have restaurants.

One floor is entirely “multimedia,” ie. CDs, games (we even found Flight Simulator 98!) and of course, films.  There are private viewing rooms and some weird enclosed desks to use your laptop/read in private.  Apparently you can also lounge on one of the many couchy-things to surf the net and even browse the VIRTUAL version of the library in Second Life.

It took a lot of walking and wandering and asking directions before I finally found the Conservatorium von Amsterdam. I was all set to take a tour, but it turns out they are closed for most of August.  CRAP. Would be nice if their website had mentioned this!  But fortunately it is situated adjacent to the Central Library.

These are the most recent pics I took tonight, just before crawling back to the hotel with aching feet. My bro and I have been walking the city pretty much all day since 9am. (And we were up at 6am to catch the train!)

Amsterdam is as beautiful at night as it is in the day, but it definitely has a different sort of beauty in the darkness.  Imagine the sound of the gently lapping waters of the canal, distant chatter and laughter down the streets, and in the far distance, a tram’s chime echoes… the perfect setting for a moonlit mystery.

Leaving for Amsterdam early tomorrow morning

It’s a research trip for Nightingale, so I’ll be scouting locations again.  Top priorities are the Conservatory (I might have to pretend I have a daughter interested in their school so I can get a tour.)  I’ll also be pinpointing the 3 main character’s residences, and the store where Charlie would be signing her new album.

Anyplace I should be sure to check out?  Keep in mind it’s going to be raining the entire time… T_T

…And don’t say coffeeshops and the red light district. I’ve seen them already, and I’m pretty sure Sofie won’t be spending much of her time in either.
